'Pro-life' organizations are anything but
Lately, I've been reading the news more than usual. This has had several unpleasant side effects, including shame, rage, and nightmares about legislative rapist Bill Napoli.

I spent my Spring Break in New York City, taking a break from being beaten by the Bible Belt.

While I was away, the Tennessee state legislature removed the right to an abortion from the state constitution, South Carolina scheduled an abortion ban for 2007, the Missouri House voted to ban funding for contraception for low-income women, and an organization called No Room for Contraception dared to ask the question, "Did contraception lead to homosexuality?"

No wonder my fellow students would rather just read the sports page.

There's just one problem with avoiding the truth: You end up believing a bunch of lies.

For instance, if you haven't done your homework, you might believe that so-called "pro-life" organizations are formed to protect children and improve the quality of their lives.

This couldn't be further from the truth.

The "pro-life" movement is not interested in preventing abortion. Their goal is to transform our sex lives and transform our families.

In addition to restricting abortion, groups like American Life League, Americans United for Life, and National Right to Life also lobby for restrictions on all forms of contraception. They lobby to eliminate access to information about family planning - even for married couples.

Focus on the Family, the Pro-Life Action League, and even the innocuously-named Operation Save America are all groups are doing their best to make sure that no sex is permitted if it is for any purpose other than reproduction.

And thanks to the donations they are receiving - donations that are "contributed" to powerful politicians like George W. and Sam Alito - they are becoming more successful than ever in their attempts to turn modern America into Victorian England.

The American Life League – the group behind "Rock for Life" – is not only opposed to abortion, they are opposed to contraception, sex education, homosexuality, organ donation, and welfare reform.

That's right, they call themselves "pro-life" – but they'd rather you didn't sign the back of your drivers license and save someone's life by donating your organs.

According to their website, "ALL is opposed to all abortion, contraception and other threats to the human person and the family. ALL will not support abortion-related legislation that contains exceptions for rape, incest, life of the mother, fetal deformity or other such condition."

That's right, ALL is so "pro-life" that they will not allow a woman to save her own life by ending her pregnancy.

Reading a "pro-life" organization’s manifesto is like having a badger gnaw on your brain. And it gets worse.

Focus on the Family opposes sex education, homosexuality, gay marriage, pornography and erotica, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The support prayer in public schools, and they encourage parents not to join the Parent Teacher Association because it has a "liberal agenda."

(Their founder, James Dobson, is famous for his book "Dare to Discipline," in which he advocates whipping children as young as 15 months old, and using objects such as belts and paddles. Sending a check to Focus on the Family doesn't make you pro-life, it makes you pro-child abuse.)

Concerned Women for America opposes not just sex education, but drug and alcohol abuse prevention education, federal funding for child care, universal healthcare, and women in the military.

The Christian Coalition has even more hypocritical and anti-life policies: They oppose not only abortion, contraception, and sex ed, but pornography, gender equality, homosexuality, and the separation of church and state. And, they win my "WTF?" award for opposing reproductive technologies such as artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization. The Christian Coalition is apparently only "pro"-life-with-no-assistance-from-medical-science.

But what can we expect from an organization founded by Pat Robertson? After all, this is the man who said on Sept. 14, 2001 that the 9-11 terrorist attacks were a display of "God's power" and a punishment for America's tolerance of homosexuality and abortion. The smoke hadn't even cleared yet, and Robertson used the tragic deaths of 2,819 innocent people to further his own agenda.

And he continues to use a false concern for unborn children to further his dangerous crusade.

And pro-life people everywhere continue to let him, even though he doesn't represent their beliefs or their interests.

If you identify as pro-life, you probably oppose abortion and want to see it reduced and prevented. "Pro-life" organizations do not want to prevent abortions, they want to outlaw abortions and punish women and doctors.

The pro-choice movement is doing a better job preventing abortions than the pro-life movement is. If pro-life Americans understood this, they would be donating their money to Planned Parenthood.

Recent statistics say that 66 percent of Americans don't want Roe v. Wade overturned. But only 51 percent of Americans consider themselves pro-choice.

What this means is that one third of the people who call themselves pro-life are actually pro-choice.

And if they read "Mother Jones" instead of "Teen People" once in a while, they might know better.

I was raised on Focus on the Family. It's so scary. I remember that I used to get this magazine they put out for teenage girls.
